Reflections (x10)
2013, Advertising vinyl, 5 x 10 m
A geometric mosaic that crawls across the underside of a stretch of temporary scaffolding, Reflections (x10) adds an unexpected burst of color and ornamentation to 14th Street in New York. A brief respite from the efficiency and economy of the city sidewalks, the mosaic literally shifts the viewers’ gaze skyward to the symbolic space of the stars and the gods, inviting them into a moment of visual delight and quiet meditation.
The intricate geometrical patterns of the tiling are derived from those of medieval Islamic mosaics, whose underlying mathematical structure was only recently understood in the West. Developed in close collaboration with a Harvard physicist, the new patterns apply and extend this elegant mathematics for the first time in some 600 years.
Installed on 14th Street, NYC as part of the 2013 Art in Odd Places (AiOP) Exhibition , curated by Radhika Subramaniam.
